Hello, is anyone out there? I haven't heard from anyone concerning the use of this Blog Site. So I will take the adage - "Silent means consent" to heart and will start a discussion of our next reading assignment here.
You had already been assigned the selection The Village Watchman by Terry Tempest Williams on page 195 of the textbook.
I would like to hear from you as to what is the author's best description in this essay.
As you post I will react to some of your recommendations. Make sure to mention the number of the paragraph you are referring to so we can read it and better understand what you are saying. Remember to support your selection. Go back and review the chapter on description and check your notes.
Hope to hear from you soon!

I think that the author's best description is in paragraph 5 almost at the end where he says:
ReplyDelete"Most of them were kind and explained that our child was like a car with no brakes, like an electric wire without insulation."
I picked this description because with this sentence you can imagine a small child who can't control his reactions to something, his way of speaking, and can't control his strength. This really stood out to me because when you compare a car with no brakes to a child you kind of get this feeling of fear because you know that when your car doesn't have brakes your most likely going to get into an accident and a child with no brakes is almost the same because they have no control over themselves. When the author said that his child is like an electric wire with no insulation the only thing that pops into my head is disaster because electricity is wild and dangerous. Trust me,I know how it is to deal with a child that is hyper because my brother is like that and we have to work twice as hard to keep him focused, under control, happy and disciplined. He is almost like my families Alan.
:D
I had to register mine, maybe yours isnt registered either
ReplyDeleteIn paragraph 7, Tempest Williams compares Alan to a wild horse.
ReplyDelete“In a sense, he was wild like a Mustang in the desert, and like most wild horses, he was eventually rounded up."
Mustangs used to be domesticated horses which on later returned to their initial wild state. This simile compares Alan, a single, sole, rare and unique human being, to a Mustang in the desert. These unusual horses do not live in arid areas, but they do live in grasslands. What the author is implying is that Alan is a lost soul in this huge world. Exactly like that single horse in the desert eventually rounded up or caught by cowboys. In Alan's case, his family would be the ones who willingly take him in their wings and nurture his young, helpless soul.
Maria and Emma, I agree with your choices of the authors descriptions. One can certainly imagine the person's behavior and what he may be feeling or is being exposed to through the author's choice of words.

ReplyDeleteHey I finally enter the blog!!!
ReplyDeleteOne description that really got mi attention was in paragraph 8 when it says that Alan created his own set of rules and he was unpredictable and in paragraph 11 when it says:"Everything I was taught not to do, Alan did. We were taught to be polite, to not express displeasure or anger in public. Alan was sheer, physical expression. Whatever was on his mind he vocalized and usually punctuated with colorful speech" That told us that society has a set of rules and if an "normal" person break it is because is an insensitive person but we supposedly have freedom of speech? Alan make a good used of this freedom of speech and he used his condition as an excuse for it or at least people look it like that. I think that by Alan having this condition has show him the world from a different perspective and he understand that our society doesn't make sense and you have the right to say what is on your mind
ReplyDeleteI like paragraph 12 because it talks about bowling. I go bowling every Saturday, and I see little kids that react the same as him. The get exited no matter what. Just rolling the ball down the lane is the pure emotion of bowling. Some people just roll the ball with no emotion. That is not having fun. Every shot is filled with the same emotion.

Yes!!!!!! I am finally here. I have to go to work but when I get out at 10 all get in and give my thought about The Village Watchman.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the authors best description was, "Then we started trips to a multitude of doctors. Most of them were kind and explained that our child was like a car without brakes, like an electric wire without insulation." This is located on paragraph 3.
ReplyDeleteFrom this description we can interpret that the author refers to Alans hyper activity as being extreme, or in other words, he is full of seemingly never ending energy that wont stop. This is why he is wild some times.
Well, I've finally logged in and i'll answer the quiz later on today. marcelino.santos@upr.edu and marce.chaks_@hotmail.com ... anyone can contact me there...
ReplyDeleteI think that the author's best description in the essay can be found in paragraph 7 and the first five sentences of paragraph 8. In this specific description the author brings us Alan's condition for the first time in the essay. The author is very direct with her words and we can see just how serious his condition is. I also think that using this description the author is trying to keep us involved by creating an emotional response.
